Spring Clean Your Marketing Strategy: Essential Steps for Q2 Growth

Spring is here, and just like we prepare to swap out our snow gear for hiking boots here in Colorado, it's time to start refreshing and refining our marketing strategies for Q2!

With warmer weather and increased foot traffic from tourists and locals alike, Q2 is often a time of opportunity for local small businesses. It's a great chance to align your strategy with the seasonal shift and make your marketing efforts work for you, not against you.

At the end of last year, we talked about getting your small business's social media ready for Q1. Now, we'll dive deeper to ensure your entire marketing strategy is set up for success as we prepare for the spring and summer seasons.

For small business owners and entrepreneurs in Summit County, this is an ideal opportunity to take a step back, evaluate what's working (and what's not), and make strategic adjustments. Below are six easy-to-follow, actionable, and essential steps that you can start making today to make the most of Q2:

Step 1: Review Your Q1 Performance

Before making any changes, take a good, honest look at how Q1 went. Ask yourself:

  • Did I meet my marketing goals?

  • Which campaigns or content performed the best?

  • What didn't perform as I expected, and why?

  • Did my audience engagement grow?

If you're unsure, this is a good time to look at your analytics—whether it's social media insights, email open rates, or website traffic. Tools like Google Analytics and Facebook/Instagram Insights are great places to start to help you track trends and identify high-performing content. This data will tell you what resonated with your audience the most and where there's room for improvement.

Step 2: Set Fresh Goals for Q2

Spring is all about new beginnings, and that applies to your marketing goals, too! Set clear, achievable objectives for the next few months. Some ideas might include:

  • Growing your email list by X%

  • Increasing engagement on social media

  • Launching a new product or service with a strategic marketing push

  • Driving more traffic to your website

One important thing to remember is to make sure your goals are specific, measurable, and realistic for your business's current stage. You don't need to jump and follow every single trend out there if it means burning yourself out or attracting those who aren't your ideal customers!

Step 3: Audit Your Current Marketing Efforts

Now that you've reviewed your past performance and achievements and set goals for the future, it's time to audit your existing marketing efforts. This includes:

  • Website – Has it been updated with fresh content? Are there any broken links or incorrect information?

  • Social Media – Are your profiles aligned with your brand and audience's interests? (This is a good time to review my guide on getting your small business Q1 ready!)

  • Email Marketing – Are your subscribers engaging with your emails? (If not, you'll want to see my guide on writing effective emails!)

  • Advertising – Are your paid campaigns performing well or draining your ad budget with little return?

A good marketing audit will help you pinpoint where to make adjustments so you're not wasting time on strategies that aren't delivering the expected results.

Step 4: Optimize for Spring & Summer

The changing seasons impact consumer behavior, especially in touristy areas like Summit County. People are getting outside more, planning vacations, and shifting their buying habits. As a small business, it's always critical to consider how to tailor your marketing to align with this seasonal shift.

  • If you're in the tourism industry, now is the time to start promoting summer travel offers.

  • If you're in retail, this is the time to highlight seasonal products or warm-weather sales.

  • Service-based businesses can emphasize spring cleaning, fresh starts, or new opportunities (like this blog post is doing).

  • And don't forget to get creative with your promotions! Host a pop-up, collaborate with a neighboring business for a giveaway, or tap into one of the many local events to boost visibility and community connection.

As you explore the different possibilities to take advantage of the season, consider your buyer persona and what's relevant to your audience, and adjust your messaging accordingly.

Step 5: Leverage a Fractional CMO

If marketing feels overwhelming or like it's taking you away from actually running your business, it may be time to bring in outside expertise. A fractional CMO (CMO = Chief Marketing Officer) helps you develop a strategic plan, oversee execution, and optimize your marketing efforts without the full-time expense of an in-house hire.

By working with a fractional CMO, you get access to high-level strategy, expert guidance, and a customized approach to growth—all tailored to your business's needs. If Q1 left you feeling like you didn't have enough time, energy, or budget to do it all in your small business, this might be the missing piece to help you scale smarter in Q2.

Step 6: Take Action & Stay Consistent

A refreshed marketing strategy is only as good as its execution. Commit to staying consistent once you've become clear on your goals and plan. Set aside dedicated time each week for marketing efforts or delegate tasks so they actually get done.

When it comes to content creation, consider setting aside one morning a week to plan, batch, and prep. Tools like Later, Meta Business Suite, or the content planner within Canva can make staying consistent much easier. They can save you a ton of time, especially when juggling other essential tasks.

And remember, progress is better than perfection, so don't get stuck overthinking every little detail!
